Darnell "Big D" Johnson
Family owned & operated food truck with hopes of going full swing 2022 Spring!
Hey, Family!
Yes, we are your family. My name is Darnell “Big D” Johnson, and my food truck – Big D’s Wings – is staffed by my family, and two local college students. I consider myself a family man, and every visitor to the Big D’s Food Truck is treated like extended family. I believe that breaking bread can bring not only families, but communities together in good times, and times that are often difficult.
The last few years have been challenging for many of us due to the ongoing pandemic. At the height of the coronavirus outbreak, my entire household experienced COVID-19-related job loss. I was laid off from my job in Washington, DC, but had an opportunity to make my culinary dream a reality. I purchased a 30+ year old food truck (the kitchen was newly modified to fit my preferences), and launched Big D’s Wings, LLC in May of this year 2021.
My first few months in operation allowed me to get a better understanding of the food truck industry, and what I quickly learned was, the food truck business is about more than just selling great food. Especially in a climate where food costs have risen at a faster average rate since the start of the pandemic than they did over the previous decade.
Big D’s has worked hard to serve the best-tasting, most authentic southern fried chicken at neighborhood events, festivals, private parties, school/work events, and breweries, and even harder to forge genuine, lasting relationships within the communities we live and serve (from feeding the homeless to our most recent coat drive). That’s why, even though we are all about standing together even within the food truck community, it’s disappointing being forced to a find fill-in or being stuck on the side of the road due to maintenance issues that come with owning a much older, heavily used food truck.
In just a few short months, Big D’s Wings has made significant headway. As a family-owned business, we strive to share our family values with you, and we believe in the principle of the Golden Rule – treating others as we want to be treated. And we want to feel safe, supported, and comforted. Especially when life throws a curveball.
A recent incident has thrown us for a loop. We showed up for our weekly event at one of our favorite spots and were forced to leave the truck overnight because it was parked and stubbornly wouldn't go into drive. We learned that the transmission is leaking and in need of repair. There is not a food truck business without the truck – the medium where I do what I love and deliver it to the people I love – the community. My vision for Big D's Wings is not just to serve wings, but to serve the community through volunteer projects, local business partnerships, community feedings, and other events.
