Meet Our Chef

It all started when our owner and executive chef, Darnell was in the eighth grade. He received the call that would set the wheels in motion for his passion for pleasing the most refined palates.

His mother, who happened to be working late, needed her eldest son to “get dinner started.” The Result? A crispy, crunchy, mouthwatering masterpiece. It was that day that Darnell knew a culinary call was in his future.

His love for the kitchen was further strengthened in high school when he secured a spot frying chicken for one of the largest fast food dining establishments in the United States. “Big D,” as he was now known, relished in the experience – especially the great family atmosphere.

Big D is a family man at heart, who believes that breaking bread can bring families together in good times, and times that are often difficult.

The Story Of "Auntie's Favorite"

Fast forward twenty-plus years. Now a pastor, Big D, found himself on the receiving end of yet another life-altering telephone call. It was horrifying news that his wife’s aunt (Auntie), a 20-year stage 4 breast cancer survivor, was in the end stages of congestive heart failure, and unresponsive. 

The hospital’s Rapid Response Team planned for a short night, informing those keeping vigil at Auntie’s hospital bedside that she would likely never regain consciousness, and if they were able to get her to come around, it would be a “temporary fix” because she was at the end of life.

However, God had another plan. Not only did one of Big D’s biggest supporters recover consciousness that night, but she was able to speak. And she made only one request…and it was for her favorite, Big D’s Special Sauce Wings! The next few days were filled with prayers, difficult conversations, hard realities, and…wings. Wings for Breakfast. Wings for lunch. Wings for dinner. Before she gained her heavenly wings, Auntie indulged in Big D’s wings.

Big D saw Auntie’s last special meal request as a sure sign that it was time to answer the call

he’d received so many years earlier. When he lost his job at a private research university in Washington, DC because of the coronavirus outbreak, he became the proud owner of Big D’s Wings.
